The LawyersInitiativeForum is a unique platform established by practicing lawyers who come from Dalit and other excluded communities in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Chattisghar, Maharastra and Rajasthan. The forum evolved from the Centre for Social Justice and Empowerment, a program run by a network of six organization on working strengthening of the criminal justice system. The Lawyers’ InitiativeForumwas formally shaped with two objectives (a) to provide easy access to legal aid for victims, especially Dalits, tribals, women, and other exploited groups through individual cases and collective PILs (b) to enhance the capacities of practicing lawyers, assist their career development, and provide mentoring support to law students. Forum members intensively work on cases of atrocities against Dalits, gender-based violence, land-related disputes, and problems faced by under-trial prisoners. The forum has a membership of more than 1482 practicing lawyers across six states of India.
